Pass the Aspirin

Why doesn't the sentence "I knew you will do that" make any sense?

I can't think about that for too long or my brain starts hurting.

Isn't it, "I knew you would do that?"

The less the words agree, the cooler the sentence is.

Both "knew" and "would" are past tense, where as "will" is... future tense? The parts don't line up.

"Would" is the past tense of what... Will? But "will" is the future tense of "to be." So you have to use the past tense of the future tense of "to be"?
