Welcome, Persuasionists

I'd like to give a friendly "howdy" to everyone who's come here from Micro Persuasion (and my, there are a lot of you). Thanks for the link, Steve!

GmailThis! has gotten me the majority of my traffic. If you haven't seen it already, take a look.

Also, big thanks to everyone else who's given me a link!

Update: "Everyone else" turned out to be...um...a fair amount of people. I even made it onto del.icio.us's popular page!

Image fight!

There's an image fight going on over at my local D&D forum. It's a lot of fun, even just to read.

It's all Greek to me

One of the classes I'm taking this year is something pretty new for me. It's actually pretty new to my school, too; it was only started a few years ago. It's a combined Latin 2/Greek 1 course.

To date, I've taken three years of Latin; this is my fourth. However, I have never done any Greek. I've always been slightly jealous of my sister, whom my mother taught the Greek alphabet to, but never to me.

Greek is the first new language I've begun to learn in about six years. It's also the only language for which I've had to learn an alphabet for. It's really an interesting experience.

Greek has much more in common with English than Latin does, something that turns me off slightly. For instance, 90% of the time, you can put the words in a Latin sentence in nearly any order without affecting the meaning; not so in Greek. The word order is not only more important, but it is fairly similar to English's.

Maybe the biggest difference, though, is with the accents. Latin really only has one accent, the macron (ironically, the word comes from Greek). Macrons are important, but many teachers don't force you to know all of them and their positions. Admittedly, this is partly because Latin is no longer a spoken language (outside of Vatican City), so pronunciation is not as important to know. However, the accents in Greek, as well as the rough breathing and smooth breathing marks, are very important. They can change the entire meaning of a word.

Differences aside, I'm enjoying it thus far. Greek is cool, maybe not as cool as Latin, but still pretty cool.

Welcome to Dumpsville

Population: Me.

That's right, cats and kittens, I'm back on the market. Line up now, supplies are limited.

Also: I'm mentioning it a bit late, but today is Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arrrrr!

Update: To go along with this post, there's a Welcome to Dumpsville church sign, powered by Church Sign Generator.

It also makes a dandy ecard (powered by Delivr). It used to be you had to break up with someone face to face. Then came the phone. Then email. Now instant messaging. Take a step back with a personalized leaving card.

Fall is here

Hear the yell
Back to school

Ring the bell

--"We're Going to Be Friends," by the White Stripes.

Yesterday was registration and today was my first proper day of school.

My teachers look mostly good. My schedule is all right, not as good as it was last year, but not bad. I'm also fairly happy with my classes. I think it'll be an okay year. It'll be hard, I have no delusions about that, but I think it'll be okay.

Last year I didn't use an assignment book. That didn't work amazingly well, so I'm experimenting with this PocketMod thing. In case you don't know what that is, here's an excerpt from the site:

The PocketMod is a small book with guides on each page. These guides or templates, combined with a unique folding style, enable a normal piece of paper to become the ultimate note card. It is hard to describe just how incredibly useful the PocketMod is. It's best that you just dive in and creating one.

I'll let you know how it works out. What I like about it is that it's free. If I print it out at school, I don't even have to pay for paper or ink.

Recently I haven't really felt like blogging (could you tell?). With any luck school should energize me a bit, get the creative juices flowing, or at least give me something to rant about.

Transported

Yesterday I went to see Transporter 2 with Gus. I didn't see the first one, but I don't really think you need to.

I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought it would, and I had fairly good expectations. Whoever choreographed the fight scenes was obviously influenced greatly by Jackie Chan movies, which was to the movie's benefit.

Like I said, the fight scenes were well-done, but there were a few moments that really, really tested my "healthy suspension of disbelief." Those who have seen it know what I'm talking about.

Good entertainment, all in all; cool main character; a plot that, while cliched, comes off in the execution; and it plays to its strengths and never pretends to be more than it is.

Fall is coming

I can hear it in the sighing of the wind in the trees and the smell of charcoal in the air.

Classes start in six days. I've been catching up on my reading, one of the chief reasons I haven't posted. That, and life just hasn't been very interesting lately.

Today I've been taking care of my mum. I managed to give her the cold I was harboring in California. I myself am still getting over it. It's mostly fought off, maybe because I've been getting twelve hours of sleep a night.

School...will be interesting. I'd rather not have to go, but it should provide some...interesting opportunities.
